The classification of attack cruiser is roughly equivalent to that of Starfleet's heavy cruiser.

The Vor'cha class attack cruiser was developed for the Klingon Defence Force [KDF] in the early 2340s. Originally designed as a counter to the Romulan D'deridex class warbird Klingon engineers soon realised that they were better off building three smaller attack cruisers the size of the Vor'cha than one gigantic behemoth such as the D'deridex - and for the same resource costs.

The Klingon Empire stayed true to its tradition of re-using a design as much as they could, as evidenced by the Bird of Prey before, and based the general design of the Vor'cha's hull on that of the D7 and K't'inga classes, though hull geometry was changed enough to make the Vor'cha easily distinguishable as its own class from the outside.

A technological exchange with the Federation, taking place shortly after signing the Khitomer accords, led to the Klingon acquiring Bussard collector technology. These were incorporated into the design of the Vor'cha's nacelles, effectively increasing the ship's range on deep space assignments. Unlike with the ship's design predecessors the Vor'cha's nacelles are angled away from the ship's main hull, improving warp field geometry over that of earlier designs.

The most marked improvement over the K't'inga class is the Vor'cha's size, which allows the ship to carry a bigger and more powerful weapons array, as well as stronger shields. Both make the Vor'cha an easy match for Starfleet's Nebula class (unless the Nebula is fitted with the weapons pod) and two Vor'cha class attack cruisers stand a good chance at successfully engaging a D'deridex class warbird.

The Vor'cha is equipped with two impulse engines, giving her impressive thrust at sublight speeds. Her manoeuvrability is second to no other known vessel of similar size and mass. Starfleet found out about this when a Vor'cha successfully tailed a Defiant class ship trying to evade the larger starship during a brief skirmish just outside the Cardassia system.

The Vor'cha's nose section is detachable from the rest of the starship and can serve as a lifeboat when necessary. The nose section has one of the three main disrupter cannons and one of the three torpedo launchers. However, once detached there is not enough power for either system to operate.

The Vor'cha is equipped to carry a large contingent of ground forces. In standard configuration, four hundred warriors and their supplies can be carried. This is possible due to accommodation standards much more Spartan than found on Federation starships, or even on Cardassian vessels.

During the Klingon-Cardassian war and later the Dominion war the Vor'cha proved to be a successful warship. A Vor'cha class was able to engage two Keldon or three Galor class vessels on its own, placing the Cardasians at a distinct disadvantage. Tables turned when the Cardassian Union joined the Dominion, Vor'cha class vessels were unable to counter squadrons of Jem'Hadar attack ships effectively, many were lost to suicide manoeuvres by the Jem'Hadar.

A changed strategic deployment saved the Vor'cha's effectiveness, two Vor'chas and three B'rels were deployed together, with the smaller vessels providing an effective screening force, allowing the Vor'chas to use their greater fire power to take out Jem'Hadar battle cruisers.

With the introduction of the Negh'Var into into the KDF the Vor'cha is no longer the most powerful vessel in the Klingon arsenal, it is beginning to take on the role of the KDF's working horse, along side the older and less capable K't'inga class (which is slowly taken out of service by attrition). The Vor'cha class remains in production.
