The Nova class is a science speciality vessel and unable to perform most non-scientific assignments.

The Nova class science vessel was designed as a replacement for the old Oberth class, which was due to be retired in the 2350s, when the Cardassian war required Starfleet to focus on combat-oriented vessels only. The Oberth class was pressed to continue in service for twenty more years.

This gave the designers of the Nova project the time to think things through thoroughly. While the Oberth was designed as a surveyor only her tactical and defensive systems had been sorely neglected, several Oberth class ships were lost to hostile forces, both regular military and irregular combatants. With the Nova class this was about to change.

Starfleet designed the Nova class vessel to be sufficiently protected and armed to be able to defend itself against light opponents. The Nova class is not intended to serve as an explorer, instead she is meant to serve as a surveyor and science vessel in territories already explored but not yet studied in-depth. The opponents it is likely to face range from small enemy scout vessels to pirate ships hoping to get a piece of sophisticated hardware.

Thus, the Nova class is surprisingly well armed for a science vessel. It has eleven short type IX phaser arrays which give her a phaser fire power equivalent to that of an upgraded Miranda class, however there are only two torpedo launchers and a stock limited to thirty photon torpedoes. If pressed into fleet engagements during emergencies, the Nova class can at best serve in the role of anti-fighter defence, her tactical systems are insufficient to do serious damage to a capital ship.

The first batch of Nova class ships were launched in 2370, however construction of the class was soon suspended when tensions with the Dominion rose and Starfleet started preparing for war. Class production resumed in 2378 and continues today. Nova class ships have proven highly successful in service and are popular assignments for science officer, many prefer a ship that will look at things in detail rather than one that explores space, finds interesting things and then calls for a science vessel for an in-depth study.
