The Akira class has a through-deck shuttle bay configuration, allowing continuous launching and retrieval operation of its fighter and auxiliary craft complement. Fighter launch and retrieval is possible while using the torpedo launchers if the fighters stick to carefully mapped out approach and escape vectors.

This configuration of the Akira class is non-canon but is used by many different fanon sources, which is why it was included here.

Description
The Akira class is a carrier vessel that entered service in the early 2360s, with the prototype U.S.S. Akira finished in 2363. The Akira class, originally conceived as a heavy cruiser during its planning stage in the 2350s, at the height of the Cardassian war, features heavily in the torpedo complement but lacks in beam weapons, carrying only three type X phaser arrays.

For a ship the size of the Akira the torpedo load-out is indeed unconventional, the three burst fire launchers allow the Akira to fire no less than fifteen torpedoes in a single salvo, all directed forward, while the two pulse fire launchers in the rear allow a combined salvo of six. Phaser coverage is less than ideal, internal space only allows the ship to carry three phaser arrays, a large one on the upper saucer and two smaller ones to each side of the lower saucer. The originally planned type IX arrays were upgraded to type X just months before the U.S.S. Akira was commissioned, in an effort to compensate by increasing the output.

As the war with the Cardassians drew to a close political pressure forced Starfleet to shelf the design of a new heavy cruiser, however the need for a new fleet carrier was obvious and Starfleet received the go-ahead to field a prototype. The Akira design was changed, the internal space of the heavy cruiser prototype, originally meant to carry a large number of science labs, was thrown out in favour of a through-deck hangar with enough internal space and support facilities to carry up to a hundred fighters, though a mix of fighters and auxiliary craft is more common.

Circumventing political limitations placed on Starfleet by designating the Akira as a fleet carrier Starfleet went ahead and constructed the prototype with the full number of weapons intact, essentially producing a ship that was a hybrid between fleet carrier and strike cruiser, capable of using long-range torpedo weapons in a supporting role during fleet engagements while also conducting fighter operations at the same time.

In a demonstration in mid-2363 the U.S.S. Akira proved so impressive that, in spite of political pressure to field more explorer type vessels, production of the Akira class could go ahead, no other carrier design was as capable and the Federation's Defence Minister successfully pushed in favour of of the secondary role as a strike cruiser. Production began simultaneously at the Antares Fleet Yards, Andoria's Tireliar shipyard and at Utopia Planitia.

By the start of the Dominion war in 2373 a hundred and three Akira class vessels were in service. They proved successful in combat against the Dominion and the Borg, though twenty-eight of them were lost in the two-year period. After the end of the war class production continued as the Federation licked its wounds from the conflict, though production speed was reduced somewhat in favour of more recent designs, to achieve a better balance of ship types in the fleet.

All existing Akira class ships were ordered to undergo a refit between 2380 and 2382, adding two type IX phaser banks, the same system used on the Lakota subtype Excelsior class, to each of the nacelle pylons, increasing phaser coverage.

As of 2387 a hundred and forty-eight Akira class ships are in service and the class remains in production, completing six per year for a schedule of another fifteen years.
