The USS Charleston was originally an Excelsior-class starship designation NCC-42285. It was lost in space in 2311, and then reappeared behind enemy lines deep within the Romulan Star Empire. After several years of wandering through enemy territory in hopes of avoiding capture, the USS Charleston successfully returned to Federation space with a database full of detailed information and scans of Romulan ships, bases and outposts.

In 2354, Starfleet issued a general design brief for a multi-purpose vessel capable of Deep Space missions, combat, and primarily diplomatic missions. The design brief included requirements for a host of recreational and support facilities which would make the new design effectively a luxury cruiser. Starfleet’s intent for the new class was to bring chivalry to the max through the class’s grandiose appearance, feel, and functionality while also showcasing the latest technologies and environmentally responsible-designs.

The general design brief included a modular starship design including a primary and secondary hull that could separate if the ship came under attack by overwhelming forces and enable the bulk of the VIP passengers safe passage away from the battle. Two project briefs were delivered to Starfleet for the Grainger and Wanderer classes. After a review, Starfleet rejected the Grainger class and the base designs for the Wanderer class was approved.

Theoretical proposals for the Wanderer class based on the defense parameters were viewed by Starfleet in 2355. However, the initial design was deemed unsatisfactory and even unsafe by the ASDB, and it was entirely too small for Starfleet’s intentions. Redesigns were required and the class project was renamed Charleston class in honor of the USS Charleston’s crew and their great legacy behind enemy lines. Much of the class’s early paperwork still bears the name Wanderer class.

After nine years of redesign, changes, and deliberations, the Charleston class’s primary hull was approved in 2364. Briefs for the propulsion, computer, weapons and spaceframe parameters were sent out to Starfleet agencies for consultation. Propulsion dynamics, including variable geometry nacelles based on the working designs for the Intrepid project and prototype macelles were approved and sent to the Jupiter Station for in-depth study. The spaceframe design was approved that same year and full specifications forwarded to the Antaries Ship Yards for designations.

As redesign on the Charleston class ship continued, the Excelsior class USS Charleston continued to be instrumental in historical events. In 2364, the USS Enterprise-D discovered three people from the 20th century cryogenically frozen. The USS Charleston was called upon to transport these people to Earth. The next year, the USS Charleston was assigned under the task group command of Captain Picard as part of the tachyon blockade during the Klingon Civil War.

Production of the first prototype Charleston class vessel began in 2366. Design teams incorporated the warp coils from the Sovereign class and a Galaxy class warp core for the prototype. Construction on the primary hull began and a matter/anti-matter reactor assembly design was standardized for the class.

2367: Primary hull 65% completion. Computers are delivered for fitting work. Jupiter Station needs new nacelle design, projected to aid the warp field by 17% as well as approves the variable geometry nacelles. These are fitted to the frame.
2368: Work continues on habitat and outer hull sections. Late in the year computer cores are activated and ship functions begin to be transferred from Station Control to ship control. Nebula class sensor/weapons pod adapted for the class. Weapons are removed and the pod becomes the primary sensor housing for the ship.
2370: Computer systems now operating at 70% of maximum. Systems expected to become self aware within the year. Warp core beguines primary testing. Antimatter regulation control is found to be outside acceptable levels. Primary magnetic containment malfunction found to be a problem. Design teams work on a solution for nine months, finally finding a solution. Primary hull 100% complete, bridge module attached.
2372: Warp core passes Review Three and is tested to 90% peak. Computer systems fully self aware and umbilical from the station are cut as the ship becomes self-sufficient. Impulse systems pass Review Three and being autonomous low-level power control. Secondary backup generators are shut down and become auxiliary systems control. Weapons systems installed. Prototype ship leaves Dry Dock for primary testing.
2373: Prototype returns to Antaries early in year. Warp stress coating is applied. Excelsior class USS Charleston honorably decommissioned and prototype Charleston class ship given USS Charleston name to carry on the legacy. Charleston class USS Charleston begins deep space assessments.

USS Charleston returns to Antaries Shipyards for final exterior markings and paint. On 2, November 2373 Starfleet officially commissions the USS Charleston.

Despite being characterized as "cranky" by her engineering staff, the Charleston served with distinction in the final year of the Dominion War, and was severely damaged during the so-called "Nexus Strike" mission. Charleston went on to be instrumental in the Cardassian relief effort. After the end of the Dominion War, the ship returned to Dry Dock where it underwent a 12-year-long extensive refit that erased many of the (extensive) inadequacies of the class and saw improvements in every major system including (but not limited to) overall EPS efficiency, vastly increased remote-sensing capabilities, improved offensive (including two dedicated phaser pulse cannons) and defensive capabilities, and entirely new warp and impulse power plants. With the Borg and Dominon threats now fading into history, Starfleet returned to its original idea of a grandiose ship capable of bringing chivalry to the max and the class re-entered service in 2387.
